Copa America Centenario: Guzan's USA through to semis after Ecuador win
BRAD GUZAN helped USA to the semi-final of the Copa America Centenario as they defeated Ecuador 2-1 in front of 47,322 fans at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
The States landed the first blow in the 22nd minute as Clint Dempsey, playing in the city where he plays for Seattle Sounders, opened the scoring with an impressive header.
In the 52nd minute, both sides had players sent off as Antonio Valencia received a second caution for Ecuador and Jermaine Jones earned a straight red for an off-the-ball incident.
There were chances for both sides as the game played out but it was the USA who struck next.
Gyasi Zardes tapped home in the 65th minute to double the lead.
Ecuador pulled a goal back from a set piece - Michael Arroyo picked out the lower left corner of Guzan's goal in the 74th minute.
But Guzan - along with centre-back pairing John Brooks and Geoff Cameron - held out Ecuador for the rest of the game.
USA will now face the winner of Argentina and Venezuela, who play on Saturday, at the NRG Stadium in Houston at 2am on Wednesday.
CARLOS SANCHEZ and Colombia are also attempting to make it through to the last four here in the States.
Sanchez's Colombia face Peru at 1am on Saturday morning at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
If they get through, they will take on Mexico or Chile in the semi-finals at 1am on Thursday.
