Copa America Centenario: Sanchez joins Guzan in semi-finals

CARLOS SANCHEZ joined BRAD GUZAN in the semi-finals of the Copa America Centenario today.

Sanchez played 90 minutes of Colombia's quarter-final with Peru, which ended in stalemate at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

But Colombia got the upperhand and won 4-2 on penalties.

James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, Dayro Moreno and Sebastian Perez all converted their spot-kicks for Colombia in the shoot-out win, as goalkeeper David Ospina produced a save with his foot to deny Peru's Miguel Trauco, before Christian Cueva put his penalty over the bar.

The win means Colombia move into the semi-finals for the first time since 2004, following consecutive exits at the quarter-finals stage.

Meanwhile, Guzan helped USA to the semi-final as they defeated Ecuador 2-1 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Friday.

The States landed the first blow in the 22nd minute as Clint Dempsey, playing in the city where he plays for Seattle Sounders, opened the scoring with an impressive header.

In the 52nd minute, both sides had players sent off as Antonio Valencia received a second caution for Ecuador and Jermaine Jones earned a straight red for an off-the-ball incident.

There were chances for both sides as the game played out but it was the USA who struck next.

Gyasi Zardes tapped home in the 65th minute to double the lead.

Ecuador pulled a goal back from a set piece - Michael Arroyo picked out the lower left corner of Guzan's goal in the 74th minute.

But Guzan - along with centre-back pairing John Brooks and Geoff Cameron - held out Ecuador for the rest of the game.

USA will now face the winner of Argentina and Venezuela, who play on Sunday, at the NRG Stadium in Houston at 2am on Wednesday.

Sanchez's Colombia take on Mexico or Chile in the semi-finals at 1am on Thursday at Soldier Field in Chicago.
